Multi-sensory Equipment (MSE) and Rooms

MSE within a sensory room can be helpful where traditional learning is not possible because of cognitive deficits. It can provide a safe space for exploration and provide opportunities for learning about the senses, cause and effect, social interaction and play. It can also be used to calm some individuals and arouse others. The equipment might also be used during an aromatherapy/massage or music therapy session.

MSE will inevitably include various lighting effects and music, but vibration, olfactory stimulation, sound effects and tactile feedback will have a role to play. Low-tech items, such as a swing or a ball pool, may also figure. Where possible, interaction with the equipment should be encouraged; items such as an interactive floor, vibroacoustic products and special electronic musical instruments may have a role to play.
